Since 1978, the center has worked collaboratively with a diverse set of partners to provide technical assistance, conduct research, and generate new knowledge on comprehensive community development and quality-of-life issues.
The Voorhees Center is a unit of the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for all residents of the City of Chicago and the metropolitan area. While rooted in Chicago, the center’s community-driven and interdisciplinary approach has connected it with communities across the region, nation, and abroad.
The Voorhees Center works on many issues around the preservation and production of more affordable housing for very low-income families. Below are key examples of this work -- for more affordable housing research, see the complete Reports page.
Before and after Chicago introduced its plan to transform public housing, the Voorhees Center has been providing research and technical assistance to public housing residents. Examples of this work are below -- for more public housing research, see the complete Reports page.
The Voorhees Center uses a broad scope to better understand the issues affecting our neighborhoods, and to identify trends such as gentrification and growing income inequality that can aid in developing effective strategies.
As a community-based research center, we actively engage with communities so that they are better informed and prepared to action.
Community based groups are vehicles for change in any neighborhood but these groups often lack the technical expertise needed to move some projects along. An important aspect of the Voorhees Center’s work is to actively engage community residents so that they are better informed about what is happening in their communities and prepared to take action
The Voorhees Center uses applied research and technical solutions to facilitate the creation and dissemination of innovative green economic development strategies and practices that promise to yield sustainable growth and job creation in the region.
