FACE (Family and Community Engagement) is committed to sharing and celebrating the accomplishments of Education Justice Project students with their family members and friends. FACE provides family and friends with resources to help them further their own educational goals and encourage them to think about the power they have collectively as families and community members. Underlying our work is the hope that FACE initiatives will help lessen the stigma of having a loved one in prison, facilitate family and friends’ support one of another, strengthen EJP students’ relationships with their loved ones, and lead to systemic change.
FACE hosts a twice-annual Open House in Chicago. Family members and friends of EJP students meet their loved ones’ instructors; view photographs of the U of I program in action; and share in fellowship with one another. The Fall FACE Open House is scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday April 12, 2014.
In an effort to promote higher education, FACE coordinates the annual EJP scholarship program. Applicants must demonstrate need and apply funds towards attendance at an accredited institution of higher education. One $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a family member of an EJP student and another $500 scholarship to a family member of Danville Correctional Center staff. The next scholarship deadline is November 1, 2014.
