The University of Illinois is pleased to participate in the Summer Youth Program sponsored by the Office of the Associate Chancellor for Diversity, Staff Human Resources (SHR), and leadership from Champaign, Rantoul, and Urbana. Summer Youth Program exposes students, ages 16 - 18, to a variety of career choices which will assist them in gaining the necessary skills to make positive contributions in future work environments. There is no cost to the Unit for  participation in the Summer Youth Program.

This summer, the University's Summer Youth Program has an ambitious goal of employing 30 high school students from Champaign, Urbana, and Rantoul. A summer job keeps our young people positively engaged with supervisors who provide mentoring and encouragement. This program also provides on-the-job training and instills good work ethics. Over the years, a number of summer youth participants have returned to the University as students or as University employees.

2017 Summer Youth Program Guidelines

Staff Human Resources (SHR) is now requesting University unit work-sites for Summer Youth Program students. You may submit your request for a Summer Youth Program student using the Summer Youth Program Employment Request Form.

Once work-sites have been identified, SHR will coordinate with the Office of the Associate Chancellor for Diversity to place students into positions that reflect their interests, skills, abilities and/or career goals.

  • Students will work in their assigned positions from June 12, 2017 through July 28, 2017 and will be paid $8.25 per hour.
  • Student work schedules can be flexible, but must not exceed 7.5 hours per day and 20 hours per week.
  • Students should be scheduled between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Summer Youth Program asks that units assign each student to a supervisor or mentor who can provide a nurturing and supportive work environment. If a unit chooses to increase and pay for additional work hours, please make a note in the Request Form comments area.

Possible University work-sites much register no later than Friday, May 28, 2017.

An orientation session will be scheduled with all participants.
